My house is situated on a site between two notable
Indian Mounds. There are several other
Tocobaga sites in the area, although some are paved and others on private property. Many of the mounds disappeared in the early part of the twentieth century since they were found to be composed of shell, they were convenient for paving and construction. Digging into the soil beneath my garden I have found only pure white sugar sand with no shell content. This particular block was probably filled with sand from a dredging before the houses were built in the early nineteensixties.
INDIAN MOUNDS YOU CAN VISIT, by I Mac Perry offers a vivid tour of mound in the Tampa Bay area as well as other parts of Florida.
